Madam & Eve

Madam

MADAM & EVE is South Africa's most popular and successful strip. Appearing daily in 13 publications across the country while also reaching out to online expatriates in every corner of the world, with a combined daily readership of over 4 million according to creators S FRANCIS & RICO.

MADAM & EVE follows the hilarious antics of two new South Africans from different backgrounds, flung together by one's employment of the other, and supported by a small yet diverse cast of loveable characters as they make their way through the challenges of life in the teen-aged democracy.

The main characters are:

Gwen Anderson: a middle class madam, more reliant on her housekeeper than she will admit - especially when it comes to wage negotiations between the two. Eve Sisulu's street smarts and entrepreneural ventures bring a good natured counter-balance to her madam's stinginess. Mother Anderson is Gwen's mom who, in spite of her grumpy run-ins with Eve, Thandi and The Mielie Lady, seems to be in no hurry to return to her home in England. Thandi is Eve's 8 year old cousin who lives next door and often brings an intellectual touch to the strip.

STEPHEN FRANCIS (who writes the strip) and ENRICO SCHACHERL (who draws it) created Madam & Eve in 1992. Their annual collections are hugely popular and the strip has also been produced as a TV series, and a pilot for an animated series has also been produced. Their latest collection is called "The Pothole at the End of the Rainbow" (Jacana, 2011)
