3 TOP CARTOONISTS VIE FOR BEST EDITORIAL CARTOON AWARDThe Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Award finalists have been announced, and three cartoonists have been short listed to win recognition for the best editorial cartoon. The judging panel, convened by Paula Fray, noted the high standard of the submissions in all categories, and believed that the finalists chosen aptly underscored this year’s theme – perfect balance.

OF SPEARS, DICKS AND SATIREFirst we had The Spear, a painting by Brett Murray. Now we have The Dick, a cartoon by Jonathan — Zapiro — Shapiro. And this satire of a genital nature has, in both cases, caused the same polarised reaction: support or amused indifference on one side; expressions of outrage on the other. A comment by the National Union of Metalworkers sums up the latter: “This is nothing else, but a frontal attack on the personal integrity and social standing of the ANC President Jacob Zuma camouflaged as artistic expression.”
