MGOBHOZI TAKES THE MONDI
ZAPIRO & MANGENA ALSO RECOGNISED
The winners of the 10th annual Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards were announced at a glitzy event held at at Johannesburg's iconic Turbine Hall last night (Tuesday, 10 May 2011), and Wilson Mgobhozi emerged the winner of the Editorial Cartoons category, pipping last year's winner Zapiro and Bethuel Mangena to the honours.
Mgobhozi draws 3 weekly cartoons for The Star newspaper in Johannesburg, and his work is syndicated to other Independent titles nationwide. He is a relative newcomer to the scene; having joined the Star as an illustrator in 2004, before becoming one of their two cartoonists with veteran Dov Fedler in 2008, after Zapiro left to join The Times.
His progress since then has been rapid: in 2010 Mgobhozi won his region's place as Vodacom Cartoonist of the Year, and earlier this year he was invited to attend the Ridep Cartoon Festival in France, where he was hugely inspired by the cartoonists he met there. This humble yet determined cartoonist is certainly going places.
Zapiro - who currently draws for The Times and The Sunday Times - is a serial winner of the coveted top award, having garnered seven from Mondi in its various forms, including one in the overall category of 'Journalist of the Year'. Mangena draws a weekly cartoon for Sunday World. In 2008 he was joint winner of the Vodacom Cartoonist of the Year Award.
Rudi Louw (City Press) won the award for 'Graphical Journalism' ahead of the Mail & Guardian's John McCann, and Morne Schaap from the Media24 stable.
Judging convenor Professor Guy Berger had this to say of the cartoonists' entries: "On the whole, we found the quality of entries excellent with a good variety of style. The country was also well-represented geographically, with all sectors represented. The winner's entries were clean, clear in their imagery, and original in their thought. They were funny and topical but above all, introduced new ways of rendering a subject that many others had also treated".
