SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR: DEREK BAUER's cartoon depicts the recently released Mandela and President de Klerk reaching out to one another, but unable to connect, as they remain shackled by the ideologies and strategies which divide them. This tragic depiction would remain relevant for much of the following four years of negotiations, until a negotiated settlement is reached and democratic elections are held.
