ASIMBONANGA
- Johnny Clegg, 1986.
[Chorus]
Asimbonanga - (we have not seen him)
Asimbonang' umandela thina - (we have not seen mandela)
Laph'ekhona - (in the place where he is)
Laph'ehleli khona - (in the place where he is kept)
Oh the sea is cold and the sky is grey
Look across the island into the bay
We are all islands till comes the day
We cross the burning water
[Chorus....]
A seagull wings across the sea
Broken silence is what I dream
Who has the words to close the distance
Between you and me
[Chorus....]

Asimbonanga
Asimbonang 'umfowethu thina - (we have not seen our brother)
Laph'ekhona - (in the place where he is)
Laph'wafela khona - (in the place where he died)
Hey wena - (hey you!)
Hey wena nawe - (hey you and you as well)
Siyofika nini la' siyakhona - (when will we arrive at our destination)

CHIP'S MANDELA DAY TRIBUTE is inspired by the work of another two great artists; musician Johnny Clegg and photographer Jurgen Schadeberg, whose work you can see below.
© Jurgen Schadeberg has recorded the life of Nelson Mandela since the early 1950's. This iconic photograph was taken when Mandela revisited his Robben Island cell in1994; four years after his release from prison, in the year that he was inaugurated as President of South Africa (1994 - 1999).
See this video of Johnny Clegg & Savuka performing 'Asimbonanga' - their tribute to Madiba - with a very special guest appearance just before the third minute! See the sidelines column alongside the cartoon to follow the lyrics (and their English translation).
