IN A SILENT COUP, 'verligte' (enlightened) leader FW de Klerk assumes control of the National Party as an emotional PW Botha is encouraged to retire. While this event would prove crucial to the Nats taking a big step away from Apartheid, there was little trust between the African and Afrikaner leaders, as this cartoon demonstrates. Even at this point, most cartoonists (and their newspapers) avoided depicting Mandela's face.
