After announcing that Mandela was to be released, FW de Klerk and his government expected him to pack his bags and march out of prison according to their carefully prepared public relations program. But the ANC and Mandela would not have it. The ANC's reception committee insisted that it would decide on the proper date and time, once all the necessary arrangements were put in place. And what the Nats had hoped would be a celebration of their generosity was cleverly diverted to be seen as a victory for The Struggle.
