I985: PW Botha's insistence that Nelson Mandela renounce violence and the armed struggle as a prerequisite to his release is met with stubborn disregard on the part of the prisoner. "How can freedom be subject to conditions?", he asked to which Grogan adds "especially when those restrictions are one sided". Note how SA cartoonists are still prohibited from depicting Mandela's image. The mere fact that he is the subject of this cartoon would have been regarded as risky at the time.
