2004: Together against HIV Aids
In this beautifully crafted yet tragic cartoon by Mangena, old political opponents Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Nelson Mandela sit side by side, mourning the loss of their children to HIV/Aids. Their political differences have been neutralised by their sadness. In a bold challenge to the stigmatisation of Aids, each family came out about the true cause of the deaths.
In an instance of life imitating art, the Zulu leader - touched by the cartoon - purchased it from the cartoonist and presented it to Mandela as a token of solidarity in their joint fight against a common viral enemy. As a goodwill gesture, Mangena drew a second version of the cartoon, so that Buthelezi could keep an original of it too.
